Brasília – The governor of the state of Pernambuco, Eduardo Campos, and the mayor of João Pessoa, capital of neighboring state of Paraíba, both states in the Northeastern region of Brazil, have announced a ten-cent ("dez centavos") reduction in bus fares following widespread protests over fare hikes in the country.

More demonstrations are planned to take place in the capital cities of both states – João Pessoa and Recife - on Thursday (June 20). The mayor of Montes Claros, state of Minas Gerais, Ruy Muniz, has also reduced the fare by ten cents, with more protests scheduled for Saturday (June 22) and Tuesday (June 25). Before the decision was announced, fares ranged between R$1.50-R$3.35 ($0.69-$1.54) in Recife, R$2.30 ($1.06) in João Pessoa, and R$2.40 ($1.11) in Montes Claros.

Besides fare reductions, demonstrators demand better public transport and more government investments in social welfare.

The decision to cut down on fares was based on Temporary Measure (“Medida Provisória”) 617 enacted on May 31 by the federal government, removing certain taxes previously levied on the profits of public transportation companies.

A Facebook post by the Free Fare Movement (“Movimento Passe Livre – MPL”) in Pernambuco read: "The reduction comes from a tax reduction by the federal government – it means that the bus 'mafia' [transport contractors] are still making huge profits out of poor services! We can't be fooled!". A motto was also coined: “You can't buy us for 10 cents” (“10 centavos não me compram”).

Journalist and law student, Tiago Cisneiros, who will take part in the Recife demonstrations, suggested providing a donation box for demonstrators to contribute ten cents each. The money would be used for education and healthcare. According to Cisnerios, this would make the demonstrators' point that their cause is much more than just  ten cents.
