Rio de Janeiro – the Ministry of Foreign Relations called British ambassador Alexander Ellis on Monday (August 19), to express the discontent of the Brazilian government with the 9-hour-long detention of Brazilian citizen David Miranda at the Heathrow Airport, in London, on Sunday (August 18).

The information was disclosed by Brazil’s foreign minister Antonio Patriota, for whom there is no reasonable explanation over what happened at the airport in London. “Nothing justifies the treatment given to a Brazilian citizen who’s not suspected of being involved with terrorism or any other illicit activity, and who was kept stranded for nine hours. We hope this won’t happen again. It’s important that we should make this very clear to the British government.”

He would also like to discuss the matter with British chancellor William Hague.

Patriota, who attended a ceremony in Rio de Janeiro in memory of Brazilian diplomat Sérgio Vieira Mello (killed during an attack in Bagdad), criticized “abuses and deviations” carried out in the name of the fight against world terrorism. He further stated that, in this fight, international law should be respected.

David Miranda is the partner of Glenn Greenwald, the American journalist who made public in the British daily The Guardian espionage strategies devised by the United States. The articles published were based on documents provided by Edward Snowden, former contractor at the National Security Agency.

The Brazilian got off the plane on Monday (August 19) at the Tom Jobim International Airport, in Rio de Janeiro. He spoke about how he was treated at the airport in London by several men, who told him he was to be taken to a room for interrogation. “They asked me questions about my entire life, and even took away my computer, my games console, my cell phone, my camera, and memory sticks,” Miranda said.

When David Miranda arrived, Glenn Greenwald said the episode was an attempt to intimidate him.
