Rio de Janeiro – A special events calendar began this Monday (September 23) at museums across several Brazilian cities. The Museum Springtime Week (Primavera dos Museus), which is in its seven edition this year under the theme “Museums, Memory, and the African-Brazilian Culture”, is offering a wide-ranging program of lectures, workshops, guided-tour exhibitions, as well as music concerts and dance performances. A total of 884 museums are putting on 2,264 cultural events until Sunday (September 29), inviting visitors to a deep reflection on the theme.

The event is held by the Brazilian Museum Institute (“Ibram”). This year's theme echoes that of the 23rd General Conference of the International Council of Museums 2013, “Museum (memory + creativity) = social change”. Mário Chagas, a museologist working as a cultural advisor for The Republic Museum (Museu da República), in Rio de Janeiro, pointed out that social change in Brazil cannot be discussed without addressing the issue of African-Brazilian culture.

“We are linking museums, memories, and African-Brazilian culture in a way that shows how memory can contribute towards a broader emancipation of Brazilian culture,” he said. “We live in a country where religious intolerance continues to grow, racial prejudice remains pervasive, and a strong African-Brazilian heritage is continually derogated,” he added.

At the Republic Museum, three exhibitions and roundtable debates will discuss African-Brazilian culture and religious intolerance. Mario Chagas believes that the event has a strong impact in the cultural and social sectors. “It contributes insight to the people who work for the museum, to our education sector, as well as the audience at large. We are discussing social issues, violence against women, religious freedom, and black women in several segments of society. The Museum Springtime Week is inviting people to reflect upon complex issues,” he pointed out.

Since its first edition in 2007, the Museum Springtime Week has been adding more and more participating venues. In 2007, 300 museums joined the event, with 874 activities taking place throughout the country. Now, there are 884 museums participating. The complete program is available on http://www.museus.gov.br (website in Portuguese).
