São Roque (SP) – A commission created by the City Hall of São Roque, a small town in the state of São Paulo, inspected the Instituto Royal on Thursday (October 24). The institute had been raided by activists early in the morning last Friday (October 18). According to mayor Daniel de Oliveira Costa, who took part in the visit, there is no need to revoke the institute’s license, as no irregularities were found during the inspection.

The commission sent to the institute agents from the Health Inspection and the Planning and Environment Department, as well as district attorneys. According to the mayor, the institute itself had authorized their entry. Activists and the press, however, were not allowed into the building.

Costa reported that the building was in quite satisfactory conditions. “The structure was enviable, with tiles all the way to the ceiling; everything very clean. The animals were very well-treated. What we saw in there was a positive surprise to us.

According to the mayor, there were still tens of mice used in laboratory testing. There were thirty to forty cages, watched over by two employees who took turns 24 hours a day. “They looked well cared for, and well-fed.” In addition to mice, the laboratory also carried out tests in rabbits and 178 beagle dogs, which were taken by the activists during the raid.

As regards the basement where, as alleged by the activists, animals were allegedly mistreated and put down, the mayor declared: “There’s no such thing. I didn’t see any activity, any trace of mistreatment.”
