São Paulo – Consumer demand for credit increased 1.8% in Brazil in 2013 compared to the previous year, reports Serasa Experian, a consumer and business insight provider. Most loan applications to buy consumer goods were made by the population with incomes of up to $210, a demand increase of 8.4%. For those earning between $210 and $420, growth was much lower at 3.7%.
Serasa economists regarded these figures as poor. In 2012, the overall demand had decreased 3.1%. But the previous two years, 2010 and 2011, saw “much more significant” increases – 16.4% and 7.5%, respectively. The main contributing factors for the slowdown were inflation, indebtedness, default of payment, higher interest rates, credit costs, and the dollar hike.
Conversely, in other income groups, the demand for credit declined. For consumers with incomes between $420 and $850, there was a 0.1% drop in demand in 2013 compared to the previous year. And for those earning between $850 and $2.120 per month, the decrease was 2.4%. Finally, decreases of 4.2% and 3.4% were reported among incomes groups ranging between $2.120 and $4.237,11 and above.
