Brasilia – .Minister of Sports, Aldo Rebelo, announced that there will be “zero tolerance” with hotels charging prices that have risen into the stratosphere because of the Confederations (Soccer) Cup that begins this Saturday and ends on June 30. The minister is concerned because the present price spike seems to be a rehearsal for what will happen during the main event, the 2014 World (soccer) Cup (that will take place in Brazil between June 12 and July 13 next year).
In an exclusive interview on the Good Morning, Minister (“Bom Dia Ministro”) program, that is produced by the presidential press office (“Secretaria de Comunicação Social da Presidência da República”) and EBC Serviços, the minister threatened to call on the Federal Police along with local state and municipal law enforcement agencies. “Those who think they can abuse the consumer had better beware of the heavy hand of the government that can go into action and even close down a hotel because of this,” he declared.
In the interview, Rebelo pointed out that the last time hotels used an international event to jack up their prices to unacceptable levels, at the Rio+20 UN Conference on Sustainable Development in 2012, the government forced them to make refunds.
The minister made it clear that the government will not allow the Brazil's hotel chains to take advantage of sports events to overcharge. “This is detrimental to the country and the city where these events take place. The unfortunate result of this kind of abuse is that in the future we will be unable to host these events and tourists will stop coming,” Rebelo concluded.
