Brasília – Attorney Luís Roberto Barroso has been nominated to be a justice at Brazil's Federal Supreme Court (“STF”) by President Dilma Rousseff, to succeed Carlos Ayres Britto, who retired in November, 2012.
His nomination was announced by the Secretariat of Social Communication (“Secom”) housed at the Presidency, after the president met with Minister of Justice José Eduardo Cardozo on Thursday (May 23).
The nominee is a Constitutional Law professor and State Prosecutor of Rio de Janeiro. “Professor Luís Roberto Barroso meets all requirements to hold an office at the highest magistrate rank in the country,” says a press release from the Palacio do Planalto – the president’s office.
Barroso's nomination will be submitted to the Senate, where he will face a confirmation hearing.
