Brasilia – The latest nominee to the Brazilian Supreme Court (“STF”), Luis Roberto Barroso, was born in Vassouras, Rio de Janeiro. As a practicing lawyer for over three decades, he began in 1981. with a long record of important cases, Barroso has been a kind of natural candidate for the country’s highest court for a number of years.
And now, after making three prior appointments (Luiz Fux, Rosa Wever and Teori Zavascki), president Dilma Rousseff has nominated Barroso.
Barroso’s legal opinions, especially in the social area, have had a profound impact on Brazilian jurisprudence. He earned nationwide fame for successfully defending a number of controversial cases. He was the Italian political activist Cesare Battisti’s defense lawyer, he also defended same-sex unions, research on stem cells, a ban on nepotism and abortion in cases of anencephaly.
More recently, in his post as a Rio de Janeiro state prosecutor he played a prominent role in preparing the legal case for a presidential veto of modifications in oil and gas royalty sharing.
