Supreme Court justices praise nomination of Luis Roberto Barroso

Brasilia – Brazil’s Chief Justice, Joaquim Barbosa, called the decision by president Dilma Rousseff to nominate professor Luis Roberto Barroso to the Supreme Court excellent. “I am pleased because of his qualifications, his personal character and the fact that we are both professors at the University of Rio de Janeiro,” declared Barbosa.

Other members of the Supreme Court also expressed satisfaction with the nomination. Associate Justice Marco Aurélio Mello, the next to most senior member of the court, said: “Barroso will be received with open arms because he is a great scholar of the law and a praiseworthy professional.”

Meanwhile the government’s Chief Prosecutor (“Procurador-Geral da República”), Roberto Gurgel, also saw the nomination in a favorable light. “He is a renowned jurist and will certainly make a valuable contribution to the court,” said Gurgel.

Luis Roberto Barroso’s nomination now goes to the Senate where he will face confirmation (“sabatina”).
