Rio de Janeiro – Brazil's civil aviation regulatory agency (“Anac”) says it will distribute over 220 additional staff members to airports located in the six host cities of the FIFA Confederations (soccer) Cup and four other feeder  airports. The additional personnel will help deal with the expected increase in airport activity and the need for more passenger services during the tournament that will take place from June 15 (when Brazil plays Japan in Brasilia) to June 30 (when the championship match is scheduled in Rio).

The measure was announced by Anac director president, Marcelo Guaranys, during an inspection tour of the Antônio Carlos Jobim International Airport (“Galeão”) in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday (June 11). “We have our people in place at major airports. At some airports we have set up 24/7 units, but we are deploying more staff to reinforce services at the ten airports that will be used in connection with the Confederations Cup. Our expanded operation will run between June 13 and July 2,” he explained, adding that each airport now has five to ten Anac personnel on duty.

According to Guaranys, all the airports inspected so far were found to have adequate customer service capabilities in place. “Even though most of the airports have infrastructure modifications underway at this very moment, we verified that airline companies will be able to keep up with any increases in passenger flows.”

Inspections have already been carried out at Santos Dumont Airport, in Rio de Janeiro; Guarulhos International Airport, in São Paulo; Viracopos International Airport, in Campinas (about 100 km from São Paulo); Gilberto Freyre International Airport (Guararapes) in Recife, Pernambuco; Salvador International Airport, Bahia; and Fortaleza International Airport, Ceará. The Juscelino Kubitschek International Airport in Brasília was to be inspected on Wednesday (June 12) and the remaining three airports within the next few days.

With regard to the Santos Dumont airport in Rio, Guaranys reported that Infraero, the government agency in charge of airport infrastructure, and the Rio electricity company, Light, are working to ensure that the power supply remains stable following last week's blackout there. Santos Dumont has also added 12 new restrooms for a total 17, including two facilities for people with disabilities or special needs. The improvements were made by Infraero and a contractor at a cost of R$ 288,000 (nearly US$ 135,000).

Infraero announced a 26% increase in its staff at Santos Dumont this week. Some 44 employees will take care of maintenance for escalators, elevators, baggage carousels and air-conditioning systems in order to ensure arrivals and departures run smoothly. Cleaning will be provided by 160 personnel (up from a previous 150). Meanwhile, fifteen information desk clerks will work in shifts to provide guidance for passengers and airport users in Portuguese, English, and Spanish.
