CHAPÉU: Confederations Cup

SUTIÃ: The tournament is seen as a rehearsal for the 2014 World Soccer Cup which will also be staged in Brazil

Brasília – The opening ceremony for the FIFA Confederations Cup starts at 2:25 pm on today (June 15) at Estádio Nacional Mané Garrincha, in Brasília. The eight participating national teams have a combined track record of 12 World Cup championships.

The Confederations Cup soccer competition is widely seen as a rehearsal for the 2014 World Cup which will also be staged in Brazil.

The organizing committee responsible for the 20-minute show that will open the festivities this afternoon in Brasilia will be staged by 2,800 volunteers and will include all the crazy things soccer fans do: waves, mosaics, waving of banners and a goal chant. The choreography was inspired by common chants and "normal" activities of Brazilian soccer fans. Carnival designer Paulo Barros, two-time winner of the Rio Carnival, created a spectacle of color and dance which will pay tribute to the diversity of Brazilian culture, as well as to the culture of the other seven participating countries – Japan, Nigeria, Spain, Uruguay, Tahiti, Italy and Mexico.

The music score will include elements from traditional Brazilian rhythms such as samba, maracatu and indigenous culture, as well as traditional rhythms from other participating countries. The show will also contain references to landmarks in all the host cities: Brasília, Fortaleza, Belo Horizonte, Salvador, Rio de Janeiro and Recife.

According to FIFA, 8,492 people volunteered to take part in the opening ceremony. Out of this total, 2,600 were selected to perform in the show and another 200 to provide backstage support. A total of 31 hours of auditioning and 100 hours of rehearsals were held. The show also features 2,800 costumes, 1,500 ornaments and accessories made by 15 costume and 50 accessory designers, using four tons of aluminum and 20,000 cubic meters of textiles. Circus artists and soldiers will also feature in the show.

Fans are advised by FIFA to leave early for the stadium so as to not miss the show. The opening ceremony will be attended by President Dilma Rousseff, as well as cabinet members and FIFA’s President Joseph Blatter. And,of course, everybody is expected to stay and watch "the main event:"  the opening soccer match between Brasil and Japan match at 4 pm.
