Brasília – The minister of Justice, José Eduardo Cardozo, reported that the Brazilian government is working on how it will question the United States on its suspected monitoring of Brazilian data.
This week's edition of the Época magazine raised further espionage concerns, reporting that the US have used electronic media to spy on eight member countries of the United Nations Security Council and Brazil was among those. The report goes that surveillance sparked off in 2010 after Iran's president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad breached a verbal agreement by announcing his plans to enrich uranium.
“We have been working on this issue and conducting technical studies so that we can come up with an appropriate approach to challenge the US. We will let you all know once this preliminary step is completed,” Cardozo said.
According to the Ministry of Justice press agent, the cross-ministry technical group set up by the Brazilian government in response to US violations is planning to meet with the US government soon, but the date is still pending.
On Monday morning, Foreign Minister Antonio Patriota tried to play down concerns raised by the magazine. Patriota said that a country's stance in the UN Security Council “is not completely confidential” and that it can be obtained from contacts, interlocutors, and even journalists. “Such concerns are recurring,” the minister concluded.
