Dilma Rousseff demands quick reply to spying allegations

Brasília – President Dilma Rousseff held an extraordinary meeting on Tuesday (July 9) with six ministers to clarify the measures to be taken by the Brazilian government regarding  the allegations of spying on Brazilian citizens by American intelligence agencies.

Dilma Rousseff demanded an investigation into the reports, saying the government’s response was to be prompt and efficient, because Brazil's security and sovereignty were involved.

Brazil has made it clear it intends to raise the issue of espionage at the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) in New York, as well as the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in Geneva. At the UN, the goal is to seek clear rules of conduct for countries regarding the privacy of their own citizens’ communications  and the sovereignty of the other countries. With the ITU, the idea is to try to enhance multilateral rules governing the safety of telecommunications.
