Fifa assures soccer fans that Brazil will have the cheapest tickets in the history of World Cups

Rio de Janeiro – Fifa's Secretary General Jérôme Valcke declared that the 2014 World Cup, scheduled to take place exactly a year from now in stadiums in12 different cities in Brazil, will have the cheapest tickets in the history of the competition. For emphasis, Valcke  pointed out that the first World Cup was back in 1930.

After presenting a balance sheet for the 2013 Confederations Cup, which ended on Sunday, June 30, Valcke stated that the tickets for 70% of the games in 2014 will cost less than those in the previous World Cups, but gave no further details.

"From the 2nd to the 48th game [that is, excluding the decisive finals games], fans will be able to buy the cheapest ticket we have ever had in a World Cup, especially when you consider the FIFA discount system. Tickets will be really cheap", Valcke emphasized, adding that an explanatory statement on ticket prices will be issued at a press conference on July 19.

As for the clash on the streets outside the Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro between protesters and the police during the final Confederations Cup game between Brazil and Spain, the only thing the Secretary General did was confirm that tear gas used by the police drifted into the stadium. "If there's tear gas outside the stadium and it comes in, what can you do? Tell the volunteers to blow it away?" asked Valcke.

In his comments, Valcke avoided saying anything further on the controversial matter of the protests and emphatically argued that safety is the responsibility of, and a problem for, the local government. "Fifa requires safety for soccer fans, the stadium and the event itself. We're not telling anybody what to do because we can't do that. This is an issue that the government should address," he declared.
