Brasília – Criticism expressed by FIFA president, Joseph Blatter, over choosing Brazil as host country for the 2014 World Cup prompted a reaction from the Ministry of Sports on Thursday (July 18).
In an interview to German DPA (“Deutsche-Presse Agentur”), Blatter stated that choosing Brazil might have been a mistake due to the protests that took place in the country. He made his opinion very clear: “If the protests happen again, we’ll have to wonder whether we made the wrong decision in choosing Brazil as the host country for the World Cup.” FIFA’s president also said that he’ll raise the issue with Brazil’s president, Dilma Rousseff, at a scheduled meeting in September.
The answer from the Ministry of Sports was: “The success of the 2013 Confederations Cup [that took place last month] shows how right they were in choosing Brazil as the host country for the World Cup. As for the demonstrations, Brazil is a democratic country that assures its citizens the right to complete freedom of speech.”
During the Confederations Cup, in June, there were protests against FIFA’s demands and the expenditures on staging the 2014 World Cup. Many of them took place in cities that will host some of the games, such as Belo Horizonte, Brasília, Fortaleza, Rio de Janeiro e Salvador. According to official estimates of the costs of preparations for the World Cup, over US$ 11 billion will be invested in airports, stadiums and new transportation systems.
