Rio de Janeiro – The latest Monthly Employment Survey released by the Brazilian Statistics Institute reported a 6% unemployment rate in June. The figure is just slightly above the previous month (5.8%) and June last year (5.9%).
The survey covers metropolitan areas of six Brazilian state capitals – Recife (Pernambuco), Salvador (Bahia), Belo Horizonte (Minas Gerais), Rio de Janeiro (Rio de Janeiro), São Paulo (São Paulo) and Porto Alegre (Rio Grande do Sul).
According to the report, the unemployed population in the coverage area for the period was 1.5 million, roughly the same amount as in May 2013 and June 2012. Similarly, the employed population was roughly stable at 23 million.
In the private sector alone, 11.5 million people were found to be working under formal employment contracts. While the absolute number remained virtually unchanged on a monthly basis, it denotes a 3.2% increase year-on-year.
The average real income of employed workers – $839.45 – also reflected stability relative to the previous month, but was 0.8% up on last year's $832.68.
