Brasília – The Brazilian government has decided to defer by one year the first phase of the tender for a high-speed rail linking the cities of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Campinas. The original call for tender deadline was Friday, September 16, and the auction was scheduled to take place on September 19.
“After extensive talks with potential bidders, we felt that the competition was likely to end up with a single contender, while other potential bidders were requesting the whole process to be put off so that all candidates could finish their preparations and complete their agreements to participate in this initial phase,” said Transport Minister César Borges. Still, according to him, the current plans to start operations in 2020 have not been changed.
Since its first launch in 2010, the bullet train tender has already been postponed twice at the request of potential bidders. The initial auction date had been set to December 16, 2010, but it was subsequently put off to April 29, 2011 and again to July 29, 2011.
