Police keep searching for body of bricklayer Amarildo in Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro – Investigators from the Homicide Division and the Public Prosecution Office (Portuguese: “Ministério in Público”) have been searching for two days in a dump in an attempt to find the dead body of bricklayer Amarildo Dias de Souza. He was reported missing on July 14 after being taken by the Pacifying Police Unit (“UPP”) military police in the Rocinha shanty town, for the purposes of “carrying out an inquiry”, as the police reported.

The search began on Thursday (August 8) and should last until the end of the week. The goal of the police is to find out whether Amarildo’s body was taken to the local city dump by a local garbage truck. According to the investigators, his body may be found in the dump, as a police officer on duty at a UPP in Rocinha was informed by his uncle, who works with waste collection.

According to prosecutor Décio Alonso, from the state Military Justice, “this kind of search is extremely complicated since it’s a really vast area; and, since it’s been over 20 days since Amarildo’s disappearance, the task must be performed carefully. We’ve been following and helping the police agents’ efforts to find possible organic remains,” Décio explained.

The disappearance of the bricklayer attracted international attention through social media after the case became famous for the question “Where is Amarildo?”
