Rio de Janeiro – The 2014 World Cup will be a great success, as predicted by FIFA Secretary-General Jérôme Valcke. He declared that the organization is feeling more reassured after the positive outcomes of the Confederations Cup in June, through which seven host cities were tested.

“The Confederations Cup let us see how FIFA and Brazil worked together. The results were great, in terms of the organization and the support from the fans. This gives us the confidence to say that, yes, we’ll have a successful World Cup,” he explained.

Jérôme Valcke did not show any concerns with the current state of the constructions works for the Cup. “We’re not ready yet. We need to finish seven stadiums, but there’s no doubt about the success we’ll have. We still have a lot of work to do, but we’re feeling calmer and we’re sure that [the Cup] will be great for FIFA and Brazil,” Valcke said in a press conference, after an assessing visit to the host cities of São Paulo, Curitiba and Manaus.

Minister of Sport Aldo Rebelo, who also took part in the interview, mentioned a possible rise in the price of hotel rooms during the cup, but pointed out that the government does not make any direct interference, as this is a private-run initiative. The minister further remarked that the problem is not a shortage of rooms available during the competition.

“The government granted a line of credit of over US$ 368 million for the extension of hotel chains. It’s been nearly exhausted (…). What the sector fears is not too little interest in the World Cup, but exactly the opposite, too much interest, which may eventually depreciate prices in this sector.”

During the press conference, figures were published which showed the amount of tickets requested for the World Cup – 2.3 million tickets were requested by a total of around 400 thousand people, 84.8% of whom are Brazil fans. Argentina fans come second, followed by the US. Football fans from 200 countries have signed in for purchasing tickets for the 2013 World Cups.
