Rousseff criticizes removal of Bolivian senator

Brasília – President Dilma Rousseff criticized on Tuesday (27) the operation that brought Bolivian senator Roger Pinto Molina to Brazil. According to her, countries have the obligation to protect their refugees, ensuring their safety and physical integrity. “I regret that a Brazilian refugee should have been submitted to this situation. The first action a civilized and democratic State should take is protect the life and ensure the safety of its refugees.”
She denied that the conditions under which the Senator was sheltered at the Brazilian Embassy in La Paz were precarious. When diplomat Eduardo Saboia clarified the operation, he mentioned humanitarian reasons. He even compared the senator’s situation to that of president Rousseff, when she was arrested during the military regime.
“We ensure the refugee’s comfort,” said the president, who added declared there is no similarity between the Brazilian diplomatic seat and the Detachment of Information Operations - Center for Internal Defense Operations (DOI-Codi), the agency for military repression where she was kept as a prisoner during the military dictatorship. “I know what the DOI-Codi is and I assure you that the DOI-Codi is as distant from the Brazilian embassy in La Paz as heaven is from hell.”
On the involvement of marines in the operation tat brought the Bolivian senator to Brazil, Rousseff said that the minister of Defense, Celso Amorim, is to clarify the issue today (August 27).
Pinto Molina, who spent 454 days in the Brazilian embassy, arrived in Corumbá (a city in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul) after a 22-hour trip on a diplomatic car escorted by marines. From Corumbá, the senator was brought by plane to Brasília, where he stays at his lawyer’s house.
