Rio de Janeiro – The Monthly Electric Energy Market Review released on Thursday (September 26) by Brazil's Energy Research Office (“EPE”, housed under the Ministry of Mines and Energy) reported that electricity consumption in the country rose 4.1% in August compared to the same month in 2012, reflecting an increase of 38,686 gigawatt hours (GWh).
In the industrial sector alone, the year-on-year increase was 1.6% (15,883 GWh), whereas home consumption rose 7% – the biggest contribution to the overall national growth. The most significant increases in the domestic sector were reported in the South (10.2%) and Northeast (9.9.%) regions. In the South, bitter cold weather with sub-zero temperatures led to extensive use of heaters, and in the Northeast, the increase resulted from higher home appliance sales.
In the Southeast, a 4.8% increase echoes the figure for São Paulo, the leading state market in the region. For the year-to-date period, domestic consumption rose 4.3% in that state.
Also according to the EPE Monthly Review, the consumption in trade and services rose 4.7% (6,597 GWh) compared to the same month in 2012. Between January and August 2013, a reported 5.5% growth was assigned to a slower pace of expansion in the sector.
The survey went on to reveal that energy-intensive sectors have maintained their declining electricity consumption, whereas in other sectors, an upward trend contributed toward the overall industrial increase. This was especially felt in the South and Central-West regions.
