Brasília – After two years of investigation, Brazil’s Federal Police found out how a gang made up of civil servants generated a loss of US$ 175.6 million by means of several fraudulent public tenders. Agents have confiscated a number of vehicles, an aircraft, US$ 219.5 thousand, jewels, US$ 21.9 thousand in foreign currency, as well as imported watches. Two people were arrested in flagrante, one for drug dealing, the other for embezzlement of public funds. Ten houses were seized by the courts.
The criminals were using a sort of non-governmental organization (NGO) to simulate overpriced services and services which were not provided. The frauds were committed in eleven states and also in the Federal District, which encompasses Brasília (Brazil’s capital city) and neighboring cities.
Among the people fired are Geraldo Riesenbeck, Coordinator of Contracts and Partnerships of the Secretariat for Public Policies of Employment; and employee Anderson Brito Pereira, who worked at the cabinet of minister of Labor and Employment Manoel Dias. Deputy minister Paulo Roberto Pinto is also under investigation.
