Russia ambassador agrees to put Brazilian commission through to Snowden

Brasília – Brazilian deputies met with Russia's ambassador to Brazil, Sergey Akopov, on Tuesday (September 17). The deputies, who are members of the Foreign Relations and National Defense Committee, are considering sending a parliamentary mission from Brazil to Moscow to contact former US National Security Agency (NSA) contractor, Edward Snowden. The former NSA agent has been under asylum in Russia after publicly disclosing that US government agencies have been spying on communications involving governments and officials – including Brazil's.

According to Deputy Ivan Valente, the ambassador promised to contact his country's chancery to find out Snowden's whereabouts, and get back to the commission by next week. He should also confirm if the refugee whistleblower will be available to receive the Brazilian mission.

Valente said that the mission will depend on the Russian ambassador's response. Still, he is confident that Snowden will be willing to disclose the spying reports, “if only because, the more the world is aware of his [Snowden's] standing, the safer he will feel.”
