Brasília – The second phase of the More Doctors Program launched by the Brazilian government has started with 566 enrollments. Participants include 417 Brazilian doctors and 149 doctors from other countries or who completed their medical studies overseas. The country will also welcome 2,000 Cuban doctors in its second phase, as outlined in the agreement between the Brazilian Health Ministry and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).
Only 149 out of 1,602 doctors with foreign diplomas successfully completed the enrollment procedures and had their documents validated by Brazilian consulates in their home countries. They are going to work in poverty-stricken locations and the slums of 70 Brazilian cities. According to the Ministry of Health, applicants who failed to complete their enrollment will be allowed to update their documentation and submit applications in the upcoming phases.
In this second phase, participating doctors include foreign doctors from eleven countries, in addition to 44 Brazilians holding degrees from foreign medical schools. They will start attending the onboarding and evaluation period on October 7.
The 417 Brazilian doctors successfully admitted in the second phase have chosen to work in 228 municipalities and nine indigenous health districts.
The Ministry of Health reported that 87 doctors holding foreign diplomas enrolled in the first phase had been granted temporary professional licenses by Tuesday (September 24).
