Brasília – Brazil’s Commission of Foreign Relations of the Chamber of Deputies will send an official request to the Russian government for Brazilian biologist Ana Paula Maciel to answer out of jail the charges of piracy pressed against her. She was taken to prison in Murmansk, northern Russia, on September 18, along with 29 other people, during a protest staged by Greenpeace against the exploration of oil in the Arctic. The request, written out by deputy Henrique Fontana, was approved on Wednesday (October 9).

The activists made up the crew aboard the icebreaker Artic Sunrise. They were in Murmansk to protest against the Russian state-run company Gazprom, which has plans of exploring oil in the Arctic. They were arrested as they tried to climb up the Prirazlomnaya oil platform, the region’s first deep-sea platform, which, according to the organization, is expected to start functioning next year.

Representatives from the Parliamentary Front in Defense of Human Rights are planning to collect signatures on Wednesday (October 9) in support of Maciel’s release.
