São Paulo – From January to September this year, sales in the supermarket sector achieved an increase of 4.94%. There was also a 4.81% growth against September last year, but from August to September 2013, sales fell 5.12%. These figures were released on Tuesday (October 29) by the Brazilian Association of Supermarkets (“Abras”).
Prices, however, are higher, in spite of having dropped slightly (0.92%) in September. The group of 35 products most sought-after by the population, called “basic food basket”, showed an average price increase of 6.88% from September 2012. Among the products whose prices increased most significantly are whole milk powder, wheat flour, frozen chicken and mozzarella cheese.
According to the organization, the Abras National Sales Index is a monthly study into the performance of the supermarket sector, which gathers data from 130 establishments from all across Brazil, covering over 2,800 stores, accounting for approximately 60% of the sales in the sector.
