Brasília – Agriculture ministers from all five members of BRICS (made up of the emerging countries Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) signed this Tuesday (October 29) a joint declaration for the adoption of measures that minimize the impacts of climate changes on food security.
Brazilian minister Antônio Andrade signed the deal at the 3rd Meeting of the BRICS Ministers of Agriculture and Agrarian Development, in Pretoria, South Africa. He said that the climate effects can be reduced by changing the sowing date, the variety of seed species, as well as shadowing and irrigation techniques.
According to Brazil's minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply, the document introduces initiatives aimed at stimulating the production of foodstuffs less dependent on practices that harm the environment.
Brazil is expected to host the next BRICS conference, in March 2014, in Fortaleza, capital city of the state of Ceará.
