Rousseff announces funds allocated for São Paulo transport

São Paulo – The state of São Paulo will be allocated over $2.4 billion by the federal government for expansion and renovation works in the city’s transport network.

The announcement was made on Friday (October 25) by president Dilma Rousseff at the seat of the state government. According to Rousseff, the resources funneled into this sector of the state totals $9.6 billion.

Rousseff further announced that $64 billion will be allocated to major urban centers all across the country. She went on to mention that the São Paulo government (linked to “PSDB”, an opposition party) has, as a non-refundable grant, $595 million available in the federal budget. She emphasized that the interests of Brazilians are above divergences between political parties. “Long-term works in Brazil are not possible without this kind of funding.”

Rousseff argued for the joint effort of all three governmental spheres – Union, states and municipalities – with the purpose of putting an end to “Brazil’s historical deficit” and pointed out that it was not appropriate to start construction works on this scale in the 80’s and 90’s, since the country was going through difficult moments. She mentioned the joy felt by a civil servant in 2005 celebrating the $228.8-billion investment in sanitation all across Brazil.

“At the time, we had to ask the [International] Monetary Fund for permission,” the president said. Addressing São Paulo governor Geraldo Alckmin, she stated: “That’s why it was so good, governor, to pay the debt [with] the Monetary Fund, which no longer oversees our debt management.” She was applauded by congressmen and mayors.

President Dilma Rousseff pointed out that investing in the subway networks of Brazilian cities is crucial in that “traffic is not interrupted”, and transport becomes “different, fast, efficient and safe”.
