Brasilia – Brazil's President Dilma Rousseff said on her Twitter last Thursday (October 10) that she asked the Foreign Minister, Luiz Alberto Figueiredo, to look for a top-rank government contact to work with Russia's government for a solution to the detention of Brazilian biologist Ana Paula Maciel. The biologist is facing charges of piracy after being arrested on September 18 alongside 29 other Greenpeace activists during a protest in Murmansk, north Russia, against oil exploration in the Arctic.
“I've told the Foreign Ministry to give full assistance to Brazilian Ana Paula Maciel, who was arrested in Russia during an environmental protest,” Rousseff posted.
On Wednesday (October 9), the Foreign Relations Committee of the House of Representatives announced it would submit a request to the Russian government via the embassy in Brasília to let Maciel await trial in freedom.
The activists were crewmembers of the Arctic Sunrise icebreaker, and were protesting against Gazprom, a Russian state-owned oil and gas corporation. They were arrested while trying to climb the Prirazlomnaya platform, the region's first offshore platform, which is expected to become operational next year.
