Rio de Janeiro – A groundbreaking survey released on Monday (Nov. 4) called “Brazilian Favela X-Ray” found that 93% of slum dwellers in Brazil believe that their living standards will improve in 2014. The poll was conducted by the Data Favela Institute, who surveyed two thousand people from across 63 slum communities in Brazil between July and September.

According to one of the institute founders, Renato Meirelles, “the slum dwellers showed more optimism than average Brazilians.”

Yet another sign of optimism were the 76% who said they believe living conditions in their communities will improve. However, 53% revealed going through food hardship in the past, and 30% reported experiencing prejudice.

The study, which leverages data from the National Household Sample Survey (PNAD), the Population Census, and the Consumer Expenditure Survey (POF), all three conducted by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), reported socioeconomic development in the slums, where the population advanced from a makeup of 65% of lower class residents in 2003 to an equal ratio of middle-class members in 2013.

Also according to the survey, 75% expect that in ten years from now, they will remain in, or rise to, the middle class, whereas 10% expect to ascend to the upper class.

Income growth was also evidenced by improved access to consumer goods among favela populations – 99% of residents were found to have refrigerators, 20% have a car, and 1.1 million are planning to buy a house or an apartment within the next 12 months.

On the negative side, they complained about poor public services, violence, and limited access to culture – 70% of slum dwellers see education as a socioeconomic enabler, and 73% of young respondents have had better educational backgrounds than their parents had.

Looking forward, 1.4 million of the total 11.7 million favela dwellers were found to aspire to go to college/university and 2.5 million plan to pursue vocational education.
