Brasília – The creation of a website that gathers content from the eight member countries of the Alliance of Portuguese-Language Information Agencies (“ALP”) was among the most talked-about topics during the organization’s 6th meeting, started on Monday (25 Nov.) at the headquarters of the Brazilian Communication Corporation, “EBC”. The purpose of the web portal is to disseminate news about the reality of Portuguese-speaking countries and to promote mutual knowledge in the language.

Smaller and younger public agencies – those of Cape Verde (Infopress), Guinea-Bissau (“ANG”), Mozambique (“AIM”), São Tomé and Príncipe (“STP-Press”) and East Timor (“Etna”) – have argued that the creation of a common portal requires the coordination of larger agencies: Brazil’s Agência Brasil, Portugal’s Lusa, and Angola’s Angola Press (“Angop”).

Afonso Camões, a representative from Lusa, stated, “We must be pragmatic. Either we create the portal with help from EBC, Angop and Lusa, or we don’t create it at all. The agencies are at different stages and we cannot demand the same involvement from agencies in the process of creation and under development.” During the meeting, seeking sponsorship was one of the solutions taken into consideration to make the creation of the website possible.

Gustavo Mavie, director-general of the Mozambican agency, called for the concerted efforts of all member countries to set goals that lead to the fulfillment of the project: “I don’t want this to be just another meeting. We have to set deadlines for implementation, execution and conclusion.” He also underscored that smaller and recently created agencies, like AIM, will need the cooperation of the other partners to have their professionals trained and specialized.

Regarding investments from the Brazilian company as a means to democratize Brazilians’ access to information, EBC’s CEO Nélson Breve stated that “it is the duty of the Government to disseminate information and content that are diverse and democratic, so that people may enjoy their rights as citizens.”

In the view of Nélio Isaac Sarmento, East Timorese State Secretary of Social Communication, the joint efforts of public lusophone agencies bridge political, economic and social gaps: “The creation of an agency is a crucial step for the consolidation of democracy and development that must be acknowledged.”

At the meeting, which is scheduled to end on Friday (26 Nov.), the chair of ALP, currently occupied by Daniel Miguel Jorge, from Angola Press, will be taken by EBC’s CEO Nélson Breve.

ALP was founded in Lisbon, in July 1996, to foster the development of national information agencies and professional training in the journalistic and technological fields.
