Rio de Janeiro – President Dilma Rousseff mentioned on Monday (Dec. 9) the role of highway concessions in improving Brazil’s infrastructure. During the opening ceremony of the Clinton Global Initiative, created by former American president Bill Clinton, in Rio de Janeiro, she said that the process of reforming the country’s infrastructure is gathering pace through the system of concessions.
“Today, we’re taking care of the reformation of our infrastructure, with substantial public and private investments, based on the system of concessions to the private sector, which is gathering pace. We’ve invested in a partnership with the private enterprise aimed at our highways and the improvement and expansion of our ports and airports.”
According to Rousseff, the country is investing for the first time in a railway expansion project. She also reminded those present of the expansion of transmission lines and energy parks.
The president went on to say that it is necessary to invest in integrating Latin America’s production in an attempt to reduce regional inequalities. In her view, the region’s industry, its livestock and farming, as well as its services sector, should be complementary. She also remarked that it is important to take advantage of South America’s geography: the continent is surrounded by the world’s main oceans: the Atlantic and the Pacific.
