Brasília – The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) launched the “Protect the Goal” campaign on Thursday (Dec. 5) in Salvador, Bahia. The aim of the initiative, a collaboration with Brazilian authorities ahead of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, is to raise awareness for HIV and encourage young people to use condoms, as well as expanding access to antiretroviral therapy (HAART).

The campaign tagline, “From Soweto to Salvador”, is a reference to historical and cultural links between Brazil and South Africa, the latest World Cup host, where UNAIDS also campaigned. Currently, over 35.3 million people are estimated to have HIV worldwide. In Brazil, the infected population is about 718,000.

According Djibril Diallo, Senior Advisor to UNAIDS Brazil Executive Director Michel Sidibé, “About 4.6 million young people aged between 15 and 24 are living with HIV, many of whom do not have access to treatment or are actually unaware of their HIV status. Early diagnosis and treatment is crucial to save those lives.”

The UNAIDS Coordinator in Brazil, Georgiana Braga Orillard, explained that the association between HIV and soccer is targeted at young, vulnerable audiences: “'Protect the Goal' is designed to get young people to talk about AIDS and sexuality positively and without taboos.”

The campaign, which includes sports-star appearances and performance acts, will partner with the Ministry of Health to provide rapid testing and counseling in mobile units in 12 World Cup host cities, as well as two million giveaway condoms in 2014.
