Brasília – The Public Prosecution Office (MP) is calling on the state government of Maranhão, Northeast Brazil, to call in reinforcements from the National Security Force (FNS) for patrolling in the metropolitan area of the capital, São Luís. The move is a response to the recent attacks of violence and vandalism commanded by criminal leaders and organizations, striking fear into the population. The prosecutors urge that local inmates must be moved to federal prisons.
Some 150 men from the FNS have been providing security at Pedrinhas penitentiary since October, when a riot left nine dead and 20 wounded.
On Monday (Jan. 6), police held six suspects – including three teenagers – of torching a bus on Friday evening (3), killing a six-year-old child. Ten suspects had already been identified. A search operation at Pedrinhas penitentiary found 16 cold weapons, 22 .38 bullets, three mobile phones, batteries, chargers and SIM cards.
