Brasília – During an interview to local radio stations from the state of Rio Grande do Sul, south Brazil, President Dilma Rousseff confirmed that she will announce her decision on her October state visit to Washington later on the day (September 17).
On Monday evening, Rousseff met with Foreign Minister Luiz Alberto Figueiredo Machado to discuss the US government's response to Brazil's questioning on the spying reports.
During the meeting, the president received a telephone call from the president of the United States, Barack Obama. The conversation lasted twenty minutes. “As for my conversation with President Obama, indeed it happened, yesterday evening, and will give an interview later today to update you on our decision concerning this US visit issue,” Rousseff said on the radio.
The president started to consider canceling her state visit to Washington in October after reports that the United States have been spying on electronic communications from Brazilian nationals, including Rousseff herself, and key Brazilian corporations such as state oil company Petrobras.
Rousseff had been waiting on the outcome of Figueiredo's meeting with US National Security Advisor Susan Rice last week in order to make her decision.
