Brasília – The salary of the 400 Cuban doctors who will work in the More Doctors program should be somewhere between US$ 1.05 thousand and US$ 1.7 thousand per month, as reported on Friday (August 23) by Fernando Menezes, assistant secretary of the Work and Education Management for Health Care of Brazil’s Ministry of Health. In his view, the variation is based on agreements that the Cuban government negotiated with other countries, where other professionals have also been sent.

Menezes pointed out that the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO), with which the Brazilian government signed a term of cooperation, is responsible for acting as an intermediary in the agreement with the Cuban government. The Ministry of Health will allot to PAHO around US$ 215 million until February 2014, as determined by the provisions fixed the More Doctors program – around US$ 4.2 thousand for each professional. Then, PAHO will send the resources to the Cuban government, which will pay the doctors according to their own criteria.

He explained, after a meeting with Rafael Barbosa, health secretary of the Federal District, that “having other contracts in mind, since the Cuban government has agreements all over the world, [salaries] are usually calculated proportional to 25%-40% [of what is paid by the country receiving the doctors], but that depends on the country’s cost of living and the conditions and the quality the doctor will find in that country.”

The assistant secretary of the Ministry of Health further stated that the payments to be received by the Cuban doctors coming to Brazil may float depending of the cost of living in the cities where they will be sent: “This exact amount floats, and will continue to do so, because once the conditions are established as to where he will live, the Cuban doctor may receive more or less,” he said.

According to information from BBC Brasil, the number of Cuban health professionals working outside the island is currently over fifteen thousand doctors and five thousand health technicians, among others, working in sixty countries.

As reported by that news agency, they make a profit to their country of approximately US$ 5 billion every year. In Venezuela, for instance, the services provided by Cuban doctors allows Cuba to earn 100,000 barrels of oil every day.
