Brasília – On Wednesday (August 21), Antonio Patriota, Brazil’s minister of foreign relations, ruled out the possibility of retaliation against the UK for detaining the Brazilian citizen David Miranda for almost nine hours, in London, at the Heathrow airport. Patriota restated, however, that the Brazilian government awaits the retrieval of Miranda’s hardware, seized at the airport, as well as clarifications over the episode.
“We hope that this is an isolated case and that it won’t happen again,” the foreign minister said, referring to Brazil’s decision not to adopt any measures of retaliation and reciprocity against the British, like implementing stricter policies towards UK citizens arriving in Brazil.
In a telephone interview for Agência Brasil, Patriota gave a detailed account of the conversation he had had on Monday (August 19) with British chancellor William Hague. In the ten-minute talk, Patriota protested against Miranda’s detention, reminding the him that this kind of procedure is “counterproductive and does not contribute to coordinated international actions.” The foreign minister further stated that he stressed “Brazil’s strong commitment with civil rights and the freedom of individuals.”
David Miranda is the partner of The Guardian journalist Glenn Greenwald, who published information about the espionage scheme run by the American government. When Miranda was detained, British agents seized a laptop, a flash-drive, video games and a cell-phone. According to Patriota, the Brazilian government is awaiting Miranda’s property to be returned to its owner.
