Brasília – Another wave of 177 Cuban doctors selected in the second phase of the More Doctors program arrived in Recife, capital of the state of Pernambuco, on Tuesday (Dec. 3). They were welcomed by Sônia Brito, Head of Health Inspection Management under the Ministry of Health, for a week of scheduled visits to hospitals and health centers before relocating to the 78 cities where they registered to work as of December 9.

Last Monday (2), another 98 Cuban doctors arrived in Curitiba, Paraná; 209 in São Luís, Maranhão; 230 in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais; 91 in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte; and 75 in João Pessoa, Paraíba.

The groups are spending a week learning more about the healthcare system and common diseases in these regions, before they set out for the municipalities and indigenous districts. As of Dec. 9, they will join the program's existing 3,678 practitioners who are already working in basic health units, making up a total 5,796 doctors in 2,025 cities.

A total of 3,000 Cuban doctors have convened in five capital cities – Brasília, Fortaleza (Ceará), Vitória (Espírito Santo), Belo Horizonte (Minas Gerais) and São Paulo (São Paulo) – over the past three weeks to complete the onboarding and assessment period of the More Doctors program. They are required to pass their onboarding training in order to obtain a temporary working license from the Ministry of Health, which is mandatory for foreign doctors to work in Brazil.

Enrollments for the third phase of the More Doctors program opened last Thursday (Nov. 28) on the program website. For applicants who graduated in Brazil, the enrollment period closes on Dec. 9. Practitioners registered in other countries must enclose their documents validated by consulates by Dec. 13th. Eligible locations include all municipalities that have not yet been applied for.
